Ed Milliband - Michael Foot Two?

Why has Ed Milliband's lead over the Conservatives halved in just seven days?
If you read the political commentators, it's because various political big beasts have reminded
him that he should be presenting alternative policies, rather than simply relying on his poll lead to float him into power in 2015.
Well, perhaps they're right. But I don't think the man in the street cares much for the opinions of politicians. We've got opinions of our own. If the critics have done any harm to Ed, it will be by reminding the public that he still exists - and that his policies are deeply unpopular. More tax and spend, closer union with Europe, more immigration - and nothing concrete at all about reducing the deficit.
The main problem for Ed - and it is a problem which will bulk larger as 2015 approaches - will come from within his own ranks. I suspect that many prospective voters will have been turned off by the chorus of spite over Mrs Thatcher's death. The news that some leftists have been planning their campaign of abuse for years will make many people wonder what kind of people these are.
The last nail in Ed's coffin will probably be knocked in by the unions, who now have far more power over the Labour Party than ever before, due to the party's rocky finances. Already they are campaigning for more strikes. The blame for any disruption will be laid fairly and squarely at Ed's doorstep.
No, 2015 certainly won't be a shoo-in.

An enigmatic caption to an enigmatic photograph. The Article, in Sky News, deals with the death of a young partygoer.

Nul Points for spelling

If you're planning to hop on an aeroplane and fly to the Dordogne, don't get The Sun to write up your excursion. They might get into the sort of spelling difficulties exhibited on the website of today's issue:

Nul Points for spelling, chaps.

Le Style, C'est L'homme.

The old year fizzled out to the accompaniment of sleazy revelations about our 'best-loved' showbiz personalities. Dominating all was the case of Jimmy Savile, revealed as a multiple rapist. More recently TV's 'Mr Magic'  Paul Daniels chipped in with his own tasteless recollections, staggering those of us who could hardly believe that he could ever have been considered sexually attractive by anyone other than his missus, 'The Beautiful Debbie McGee'.

Now - on the old principle that There's No Show Without Punch - up pops Jim Davidson. In The Star he reveals:
... Davidson has a big secret up his sleeve which he plans to reveal to silence any claims (…) that he is homophobic.

He once had sex with a Thai ladyboy whom he thought was a girl.

The comedian, 59, recalled: “I was in Berlin with my bodyguard and we pulled a couple of girls in a bar.

“I sneaked out the back of this bar and she gave me oral sex.

“Afterwards my minder asked me if I’d noticed anything funny about her.

“I said: ‘Big feet.’ And he said: ‘Adam’s apple, too.’ It was a fella!”

Davidson, who has battled booze addiction, admitted to being a wife-beater and been wed five times, says he hopes people will see “the real Jim” in the Big Brother house.

He added: “People who know me know I am not homophobic.

Thanks for sharing, Jim.

MORE ON THE ABOVE: It has just been announced that Mr Davidson has been arrested by police working on the Jimmy Savile case.

Stop the Greeks Escaping!

Something odd is afoot.
Theresa May has announced that contingency plans are being drawn up to forestall an influx of Greek and other immigrants from the poorer Mediterranean countries in the event of the crash of the euro.
But why? These would be educated folk, desperate to invest their rescued savings in business and property. Just the boost the country needs - from the Huguenots to Ugandan Asians, Britain has always benefited from escapees from corrupt institutions elsewhere.
So where is the problem? I suspect that Mrs May is merely a pawn in the EU game, and the the men in Brussels are attempting to tighten the screws on the beleaguered Greeks still further. Perhaps they see the potential for an enormous rift between the Euro and the non-Euro countries. We shall see. At the moment the Greeks have the right  to go anywhere in the EC - a right given to them, of course, by the EU.

Green side-effects

'The Limits to Growth' was one of the first major works of the environmental movement. It used over-simple arithmetic to 'prove' that the world was about to run out of resources. Its publication also had a horrible, unintended side-effect, as the following article from the Washington Times shows:

ZUBRIN: China’s population-control holocaust

The bloody history of ‘Limits to Growth’

  • On May 7, South Korean customs authorities announced they had discovered 17,500 capsules made from the incinerated remains of human fetuses and infants being smuggled into the country from China for sale. Coming in the wake of the high-profile drama concerning the effort of the Chinese government to suppress the voice of the brave, blind anti-population-control activist Chen Guangcheng, this news has placed the issue of the regime's brutal one-child law forcefully before the conscience of the world. Therefore, a look at the origin and history of this atrocity is in order.
In June 1978, Song Jian, a top-level manager in charge of developing control systems for the Chinese guided-missile program, traveled to Helsinki for an international conference on control-system theory and design. While in Finland, he picked up copies of "The Limits to GrowthandBlueprint for Survival"- publications of the Club of Rome, a major source of Malthusian propaganda - and made the acquaintance of several Europeans who were promoting the report's method of using computerized "systems analysis" to predict and design the human future.
Fascinated by the possibilities, Mr. Song returned to China and republished the Club's analysis under his own name (without attribution), establishing his reputation for brilliant and original thinking. In no time at all, Mr. Song became a scientific superstar. Seizing the moment to grasp for greater power and importance, he pulled together an elite group of mathematicians from within his department and, with the help of a powerful computer to provide the necessary special effects, issued the profoundly calculated judgment that China's "correct" population size was 650 million to 700 million people - which is to say, some 280 million to 330 million less than its actual 1978 population.
Mr. Song's analysis quickly found favor at top levels of the Chinese Communist Party because it purported to prove that the reason for China's continued poverty was not 30 years of disastrous misrule, but the very existence of the Chinese people. Paramount leader Deng Xiaoping and his fellows in the Central Committee were very impressed by the pseudo-scientific computer babble Mr. Song used to dress up his theory and even more impressed by the possibilities that arrogating the power to permit or deny children would provide to the state.
Thus began the most forceful population-control program since Nazi Germany. Qian Xinzhong, a Soviet-trained former major general in the People's Liberation Army, was placed in charge of the campaign. He ordered all women with one child to have a stainless steel IUD inserted and to be inspected regularly to make sure they had not tampered with it. To remove the device was deemed a criminal act. All parents with two or more children were to be sterilized. No pregnancies were legal for anyone under 23, whether married or not, and all unauthorized pregnancies were to be aborted.
Women who defied these injunctions were taken and sterilized by force. Babies would be aborted right through the ninth month of pregnancy, with many crying as they were being stabbed to death at the moment of birth. Those women who fled to try to save their children were hunted, and if they could not be caught, their houses were torn down, and their parents thrown in prison, there to linger until a ransom of 20,000 yuan - about three years' income for a peasant - was paid for their release.
Babies born to such fugitives were declared to be "black children," illegal non-persons in the eyes of the state, without any right to employment, public schooling, health care or reproduction. Millions have been confiscated from their mothers and placed in "orphanages" where, if not adopted in short order, they are left to expire without food in "dying rooms."
Local Communist Party officials were given quotas for sterilizations, abortions and IUD insertions. If they exceeded them, they could be promoted. If they failed to meet them, they would be expelled from the party in disgrace. These measures guaranteed results. Since 1983, the combined total coerced abortions, IUD implantations and sterilizations have exceeded 30 million per year, or nearly one billion in all.
Given the supreme importance to rural Chinese families of having a son, both to take care of aging parents and to continue the line and honor family ancestors, many peasants simply could not accept a daughter as their only child. As a result, female infanticide has become rampant. During the period from 2000 to 2004, almost 1.25 boys were born for every girl born - indicating that one-fifth of all baby girls in China were either being aborted or murdered. In some provinces, the fraction eliminated was as high as one-half. According to Chai Ling, the former Tiananmen Square rebel leader who now heads a dissenting organization "All Girls Allowed," the death toll now exceeds more than 100 million girls.
Such is the horror of China's population-control policy. America needs to take a strong stand against it and aid in every way those brave men and women who would bring it to an end.

    Local Elections: Tweedledum Surges Ahead

The local elections are over; Labour has done well, despite having almost identical policies to the incumbents on Europe, climate change and so on. The real news is the turnout: only 32%, the lowest since 2000. A thought: how low can it get before an election is declared invalid? Should there, in fact, be a minimum level?

Oh No, It's the Mosquito Story again!

A mosquito that spreads tropical diseases including dengue fever may be poised to invade the UK
because of climate change, experts have warned.

and we're off again with that tired fragment of climate alarmism which warms us that with the coming of Man-Made Global Warming tropical disease bearers like mosquitoes will move north. To dispose of this yarn briefly:
    1. Mosquitoes don't need warm climates in which to breed. They're happy in the Arctic.
    2. The problems caused by malaria and dengue fever in southern nations are due to primitive medical resources in those countries.
    3. There is currently no evidence that warming is happening. In the past twenty years global temperature has risen by just 0.29 degrees.
Towards the end of the article (in the Daily Mail) the real reason for the mosquito 'invasion' is slipped in:
The mosquito has been introduced into Europe from Asia via goods shipments, mainly used tyres and bamboo.
    No further comment.

    The Haunting Miss Lemon

Nice to see 'The Woman in Black' remake topping the box office. I was looking at my DVD of the original Central TV version today and was surprised to see who originally played the Woman - none other than actress Pauline Moran, aka Hercule Poirot's reliable secretary, Miss Lemon!

    Here comes the Sun!

Yes, 5.30 this morning saw the beginning of the northern hemisphere winter solstice. We have  turned the corner of the year, and are on the road to summer. There will be icy patches to contend with yet, but who cares - we're on the way!

    Stand by for a Sell-out

David Cameron, according to the dailies, is off to Paris to discuss the EU's problems with Sarkozy. Stripped of the journalese, I suspect that he is being called into the presence like Papandreou and Berlusconi before him, to be told that he must either knuckle under or step down. Knowing Cameron, he will probably cave in. I hope I'm wrong, but past experience isn't encouraging.

On another subject entirely, this morning has seen the first frost of the season. The factory roofs opposite my window are white over. Oo-er!

Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?

President Obama proposes to spend $480,000,000,000 to create jobs and to stimulate the US economy.
This is the classic Keynesian strategy which failed spectacularly in the UK in the early Seventies. Obviously, it will increase America's already massive debt.
But how did the US come to be in this depressed state in the first place?
I suspect a major factor is the way the West has been exporting jobs to low-wage economies over the last twenty years. It has created a powerful economy in places like China while leaving millions without work in the lands where the jobs originated. We need only look at the computer sector, in which  US know-how has created a new industrial revolution. Yet not a single computer is manufactured in the United States.
So why is no-one pointing the finger of blame? Why the silence?
I suspect because this is one of those occasions when both Right- and Left-wing politicians are muzzled by their respective ideologies. For the Right, the export of jobs is in line with libertarian economic theory:the move makes goods cheaper in the home country, while creating wealth in the poorer countries. Any unemployment caused will be temporary, until the market pulls workers into new jobs. Meanwhile, of course, welfare softens the impact.
Why is the left so silent? Because the only obvious alternative is some form of nationalism, with controls over imports and exports. And the left do not like nationalism (or for that matter nations).
So America, at least in the short term, will continue to subsidise non-jobs, while exporting real ones.
    Something's gotta give.

    Sympathy for the Devil

Since writing yesterday's piece on the capital punishment debate, another element of the problem has occurred to me. It strikes me that the popular media, of necessity, must be biased in favour of killers - or, more specifically, against the victims.
This is because that the details of most killings - the enormities committed on the bodies of the victims, the agonies of the victim's loved ones - are simply too horrible to be reported in detail, while details of the personality and background of the killer are protected by law.
Thus, it is easier for the uninvolved to sympathise with the malefactor, whose predicament - as he awaits judgement, they can understand (or delude themselves that they can understand).
I can see no way of avoiding this in a decent society - but I do feel we should bear it in mind.
